After a long and scenic journey through the hills of Nepal, we finally arrived in the beautiful city of Pokhara. Like most travelers, we were tired after hours on the road. We checked into our hotel, left our luggage, freshened up, and without wasting any time, headed towards the famous Lakeside area, located just a short walk from our hotel.
The Lakeside immediately welcomed us with its lively atmosphere. Rows of charming restaurants, cozy cafés, souvenir shops, and colorful streets created the perfect setting to begin our Pokhara adventure. We found a small lakeside restaurant, where we sat down to enjoy a cup of hot tea and some light snacks. The warm hospitality, delicious refreshments, and peaceful surroundings quickly washed away the fatigue of the journey.
Sometimes the best way to discover a new city is to let the water guide your journey.
After our short break, we walked to the shore of Fewa Lake. A line of brightly painted wooden boats was gently floating along the lakeside, waiting for visitors. However, by the time we reached the lake, evening had already fallen. The fading daylight and approaching darkness made it too late for a boat ride, so we decided to postpone the experience until the following morning.
The next day, after enjoying the breathtaking sunrise from Sarangkot and exploring the surrounding hills, we returned to Fewa Lake. This time, we rented one of the traditional wooden boats and finally set out across the calm waters. The lake was incredibly peaceful, reflecting the blue sky, surrounding green hills, and the majestic Annapurna mountain range. The gentle sound of the oars cutting through the water made the experience even more magical.
Our boat guide was not only an experienced rower but also an excellent storyteller. As we drifted across the lake, he shared the fascinating history of Fewa Lake.
The History of Fewa Lake
Fewa Lake, also known as Phewa Tal, is the second-largest lake in Nepal and the largest lake in Pokhara. Situated at an elevation of approximately 742 meters (2,434 feet) above sea level, the lake covers an area of about 4.4 square kilometers and reaches depths of nearly 24 meters in some places.
The lake is primarily fed by mountain streams and rainfall, with water flowing out through a dam built on its southern end. The dam, constructed in the 1960s, helps regulate the water level and supports irrigation for nearby agricultural lands.

Built on a small island in the middle of the lake, it is one of Nepal’s most important religious sites. The temple can only be reached by boat, making every visit feel like a unique spiritual journey.
According to local legends, the valley where Fewa Lake now exists was once a fertile settlement. It is believed that a divine warning encouraged a kind-hearted woman to leave the area before a great flood submerged the land, creating the beautiful lake seen today. While this story belongs to local folklore, it adds a mystical charm to the lake that continues to fascinate visitors.
The Beauty of Reflection
One of Fewa Lake’s greatest attractions is its extraordinary reflection of the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) mountains. On calm mornings, the snow-covered peaks appear almost perfectly mirrored on the crystal-clear water, creating one of Nepal’s most photographed landscapes.
The lake is also home to a rich ecosystem of fish and birds, while its peaceful environment supports boating, kayaking, fishing, and lakeside relaxation. As our boat slowly returned to the shore, we realized that Fewa Lake is much more than just a scenic destination. Listening to the stories of the lake while floating across its tranquil waters made the experience unforgettable.
