The winter mornings of Gulmarg, Kashmir, have a magical way of turning ordinary moments into lifelong memories. During my visit in December 2017, I experienced one of those unforgettable mornings that still feels as vivid today as it did then.

As I woke up and looked out of the hotel window, I was greeted by an incredible sight. Overnight, the entire landscape had been transformed into a world of pure white. Thick layers of fresh snow covered everything—the roads, the pine trees, the hills, and even the hotel buildings. It seemed as if nature had quietly wrapped the entire valley in a soft, white blanket while we slept.

Winter is not just a season in Gulmarg—it is a masterpiece painted in white.

The most fascinating detail was the hotel itself. Every part of its roof had disappeared beneath the snow. Only the chimney of the kitchen stood uncovered, gently releasing a trail of smoke into the cold morning sky. That lone chimney, rising above the endless white, was a beautiful reminder that warmth and life continued inside despite the freezing temperatures outside.

Soon the morning sun broke through the crisp mountain air. The bright sunshine reflected brilliantly off the fresh snow, making the entire landscape sparkle like millions of tiny crystals. The weather was simply too beautiful to remain indoors. Without wasting a moment, we grabbed our cameras and stepped outside, eager to explore the snowy wonderland.

That morning, I happened to be wearing a bright orange winter jacket. Against the endless backdrop of pristine white snow, its vibrant color created a stunning visual contrast. What I had chosen simply for warmth unexpectedly became the highlight of the day.

As I paused occasionally to photograph the breathtaking scenery, my travel companions turned their cameras toward me instead. They simply couldn’t resist capturing the striking combination of the vivid orange jacket against the untouched white snow. Every angle seemed to create another beautiful composition. The contrast between the warm, lively color and the peaceful winter landscape made each photograph look naturally artistic.

As someone who loves photography, I have learned that the best images are often created by nature itself. The soft winter sunlight, the untouched snow, the silence of the mountains, and the simple splash of orange came together perfectly without any need for special effects or editing. It was one of those rare moments when color, light, and landscape existed in complete harmony.

Today, those photographs are much more than travel pictures. They preserve the feeling of that peaceful morning—the crisp mountain air, the crunch of snow beneath our feet, the laughter of friends, and the joy of witnessing one of Kashmir’s most enchanting winter landscapes.

Years have passed since that December morning, but every time I look at these photographs, I am transported back to Gulmarg. I can almost feel the icy breeze on my face, see the sunlight dancing across the snow, and remember how a simple orange jacket became part of one of my favorite travel memories.
