There are few moments in life that remain etched in memory forever, and witnessing the sunrise from Sarangkot in Pokhara, Nepal, is undoubtedly one of them. It is more than just watching the sun rise—it is an experience that combines nature’s grandeur, peaceful silence, and the quiet anticipation of a new day.
Our journey began long before dawn as we travelled through the winding mountain roads leading to Sarangkot. The city of Pokhara was still asleep, while the stars gradually faded from the sky. As we climbed higher, the crisp mountain air became colder, reminding us that we were approaching one of Nepal’s most celebrated viewpoints.
When we arrived at Sarangkot, there was still some time before sunrise. The cold was intense, so we sought shelter at the Green View Restaurant. Holding a steaming cup of hot tea in our hands brought an immediate sense of comfort. It warmed not only our bodies but also our spirits. In that peaceful mountain morning, surrounded by silence and fresh air, the simple pleasure of enjoying a cup of tea became an unforgettable part of the journey.
After finishing our tea, we grabbed our cameras and began climbing the stairs to the main viewpoint. Visitors from all over the world had already gathered there. Some were adjusting their cameras and tripods, while others stood quietly, waiting with excitement for nature’s spectacular performance. Despite the crowd, there was an atmosphere of calm anticipation as everyone’s eyes remained fixed on the eastern horizon.
Gradually, the darkness began to disappear. The sky transformed into a magnificent canvas painted with soft shades of blue, pink, orange, and gold. Every passing minute brought a new colour, making the landscape even more breathtaking.
Then came the magical moment everyone had been waiting for.
The first rays of sunlight gently touched the snow-covered peaks of the Annapurna Range and the iconic Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Mountain). Within moments, the white mountains glowed with a brilliant golden light, creating a scene so beautiful that words seemed inadequate. A deep silence settled over the crowd as everyone stood mesmerised by nature’s masterpiece.
Although I captured countless photographs, I soon realised that no camera could fully preserve the feeling of standing there. The icy breeze, the peaceful atmosphere, and the golden light illuminating the mighty Himalayas created an emotion that could only be experienced in person.
That morning at Sarangkot was more than a sightseeing trip—it was a reminder of the beauty and tranquillity that nature offers to those willing to rise early, embrace the cold, and patiently wait for the first light of day. It felt as though the mountains were welcoming the sunrise while offering a message of hope, renewal, and endless possibilities.
For anyone visiting Pokhara, watching the sunrise from Sarangkot is an experience that should not be missed. It is not simply a tourist attraction; it is a journey into the heart of the Himalayas, where every sunrise tells a story of beauty, serenity, and inspiration.
As the golden light spread across the mountains and the valley below slowly awakened, I realised that some journeys are measured not by the distance travelled, but by the memories they leave behind. Sarangkot gave me one of those unforgettable memories—a sunrise that will forever remain one of the most extraordinary moments of my travels.
